Alzheimer’s and Dementia

The Challenge

In 2018, there were an estimated 6 million people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the US, with cases expected to double by 2060. A condition so common in our communities that nearly everyone has had some interaction with or impact from it, Dementia is a societal challenge our communities must work together to address to ensure our elderly are cared for.

How We Help

We are bringing artists, musicians, and other creatives together to use Art to create empathy and understanding for those impacted by Dementia. We do this by collecting and creating a portfolio of work on the topic and then hosting unique experiences using that portfolio. Scroll down to see what we’re working on!

Art-A-Thon

Empathy Through Art partnered with the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, Between2Clouds and Friends, and Imurj - The Artists' Cafe to host Art-A-Thon – an event that bridges artistic expression and charitable giving. Teams of 4-5 artists produced multimedia art performances in a Hack-A-Thon style format based on the topic - Building inclusive communities for those with Dementia, Alzheimer's, or other mental health challenges. By the end of the evening they raised over a thousand dollars for the cause. Click the button below to check out their work and performances.

Art of Mind

Art of Mind was a curated collection of visual art about Alzheimer’s and Dementia and the impact they have on our communities. The exhibit ran for the month of May, 2019, and was located at Imurj and A Place at the Table in downtown Raleigh, NC.

We kicked off the exhibit with an opening reception that included music, spoken word, and comedy on the topic. Check out the live recordings from the event below. Cody Daniel ended up recording a full version of the song he wrote for this event which is now on all music streaming platforms. He also filmed the music video above!
